Defining realism in AI companionship

Realism is not about tricking you into thinking the AI is human — it is about the conversation feeling natural, consistent, and emotionally appropriate. A companion can be clearly artificial and still feel realistic if her personality holds steady, her responses make sense in context, and the emotional tone fits the moment.

Our testing framework measures these qualities across multiple dimensions to give you a clearer picture than 'this app feels more real' or 'that one feels robotic.'

Personality consistency scoring

We configure a character with specific traits — say, playful and slightly sarcastic — and run 50 conversations across different topics and emotional contexts. We then score how consistently the character maintains those traits.

A high-scoring app keeps the playful sarcasm whether you are talking about your day, discussing a movie, or navigating a disagreement. A low-scoring app drifts into generic warmth or loses the personality entirely when the topic changes.

Emotional responsiveness

We test emotional responsiveness by introducing emotionally charged messages — sharing bad news, expressing excitement, or being frustrated — and evaluating how appropriately the companion reacts. The ideal response matches the emotional weight of the moment without overreacting or being dismissively cheerful.

We also test emotional memory: if you share something upsetting in one message, does the companion still acknowledge it three messages later, or does she bounce back to her default cheerful state as if nothing happened?

Conversation flow and turn-taking

Natural conversations involve a balance of initiative — the companion should sometimes ask questions, sometimes make statements, sometimes react without adding new content. An AI that only responds to your messages without ever driving the conversation forward feels passive and flat.

We measure the ratio of user-initiated to companion-initiated conversation beats across a session and compare it to natural human conversation patterns. The closest match usually correlates with the best subjective experience.
